TEXTILE INDUSTRY:
HIGH-PERFORMANCE CROSS LAPPER

In a time when the textile industry seems to have fallen into an endless crisis, dragging also the mechano-textile sector after it, we succeeded in “updating” a classic application: the cross lapper.

The cross lapper is a big machine whose duty is to fold up for a number of times a veil of non-woven fabric coming from a carding machine, creating on a 90° exit a sort of “mattress” that is then conveyed to parallel sewing machines.

This machine, dating back to many decades ago, worked at the beginning by means of an electro-pneumatic system, while more recently has started to use speed control servomotors.

Motion Engineering has drawn on the basic concepts of the machine, working out again all its classic mathematical concepts in order to adapt them to the application of sophisticated electronic cams.

So electronic cams (with synchronism laws overlapping on different levels) have replaced the imprecise speed controls.

The result was exciting: a 10-axis electronic cam enabling the powerful engines (250 kW of installed power!) to achieve extraordinary performances. 600-kg trolleys are accelerated to 150 m per minute in less than one meter, with tracking errors lower than one millimeter.

Moreover the fabric laying down density can be freely programmed, setting point by point a “profiling” law that is then interpolated with mathematical curves.

The precision and repeatability of the “synchronous” cross lapper has certainly made most competing machines worldwide obsolete.
